Little Hiro’s journey
December 19, 2020: during a cold winter night, a small dog was spotted on the middle of the road in Chiang Rai, Thailand. He was abandoned by his owner for many months. Through sheer willpower, he kept surviving despite numerous challenges. Luckily, he was found in front of a pickup truck in a weakened state. His eyes screamed for someone to show him kindness. The driver of the truck picked him up and took to an animal hospital. A vet diagnosed injuries on his face and fever. His long hair had to be cut for cleaning and treatment. The…

Coping with stress- Block off time
Many veterinarians, especially those who own their own practices, find themselves overworked and overstressed from having to pull evening and weekend hours, and sometimes in isolated settings. On top of the long and irregular hours, veterinarians often deal with the pressures of running a small business while handling difficult clients and making life and death decisions. Compassion fatigue and anxiety compounded by high economic uncertainty have been known to bring on depression. The struggle to achieve work-life balance, especially for the…

Importance of communication with your clients
Client communication is at the base of everything we do day to day as veterinarians. Communication with pet owners is key for repeat and continued business and can come in many forms, from word of mouth to targeted marketing. Failure of communication leads to unhappy clients, poor aftercare by owners, and loss of income from regular or routine veterinary care.Using your vEMR to its fullest potential can help you eliminate failures in client communication. AcuroVet® is designed with visually appealing visit reports sent by email…

Meet Dr. Maureen Kelleher and Her Pets!
Hey everybody, I’m Maureen Kelleher. I am a veterinarian in Northern Virginia. I do equine medicine and mostly do sports medicine, lots of imaging, and I’m also a surgeon so I cut a colic every now and then. Right now, I am out at the farm going to catch my beautiful thoroughbred horse and go for a ride. Trudging along behind me are my two canine companions that you’ll meet along the way. This is my dog Blu. He’s leading the way out to the pasture to pick up my beloved horse Pernicious. This little turkey is actually blind. He gets along pretty…

Telemedicine – Pivoting Your Veterinary Practice
With the recent resurgence of the COVID-19 infection cases, some parts of the country have gone back into partial lockdown and people are advised to continue practicing social distancing and staying home. Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen many changes in consumer behavior (more demand for delivery services etc.) and our expectations in how services are provided such as healthcare. These shifts from pre-pandemic time will have long lasting effects even after the pandemic is over. In fact, the American Medical…

AcuroVet®: A Faster and Easier Way to Keep Proper Medical Records
Keeping proper medical records can be laborious, but it goes a long way.For every examination or procedure, there are many tasks the veterinarians have to do, and one of the most important tasks is to write proper medical records. We understand how time consuming it is to write proper medical records after each exam or procedure. Unfortunately, there is no way out of this. If the work is not well-documented, veterinarians may find themselves liable to lawsuits, malpractice and gross negligence. In the legal…

Excitement in the air!
AcuroVet® is growing but we want more veterinarians to help us grow further! Throughout the years of Acuro, I have exhibited Acuro at holistic and acupuncture focused conferences. It was so fun to meet so many people and learn how differently we all manage our practices. This year marks the introduction of AcuroVet® and we are planning to make a big splash in the world of veterinary medicine by having a booth in the exhibit hall at AVMA! As you likely know, AVMA is in Washington, DC this year. I am sure you will be…

Food on the Road
During my year as a solo intern veterinarian at a referral equine hospital, I ate microwave pizza nearly every night. Like many in this setting, I also devoured any food offered to me or within reach, particularly if it contained sugar. I managed to maintain a normal body shape purely based on calorie expenditure but we all know that these poor dietary choices will catch up with us at some point. For me, it caught up pretty quickly working ambulatory medicine as I greatly increasing the number of hours per week sitting in a truck (well…

Battle Cry of the Road Warrior
One of the best perks of ambulatory practice is climbing back into the truck in between appointments. Whether it is a 10 minute jaunt to the next farm, or an hour commute up the freeway; this space and time provide the perfect opportunity to make calls, think, decompress, and participate in one of my favorite activities-- Truck Karaoke!Pull up next to my vehicle at any given stoplight and, chances are, you will witness a full volume vocal performance. While I may never receive an invitation from James Corden to accompany him in Car Pool…

Life is a wild, wild ride! - Part 2
The ride continues. In my last blog, I told you of my adventure to create a solution to help acupuncture veterinarians capture medical notes. As we grew our little project, people said “what about XYZ???” I heard people say “What about chiropractic? How about rehabilitation therapies? Can I use this for my regular (non-holistic) appointments?” Veterinarians wanted images of, well, everything! Chiropractic skeletons, dental images, skin maps, the list goes on and on! At first, Acuro was committed to the holistic…

Life is a wild, wild ride! - Part 1
Have you ever wondered how some people end up where they are in life? Sometimes I wonder how I ended up where I am today - board certified surgeon working as clinical faculty at a veterinary school, CEO of AcuroVet®, veterinarian for a non-profit equine sanctuary in CA, with a family of 4 (well… a husband, a horse, 2 dogs and a cat….) Twenty years ago I would never have imagined it! So how did I get here?Well, since I don’t want to bore you with a lengthy story of my life I will give you some highlights. First, veterinary school…
